FDA Green-Lights Revolution PCR-LLDPE for food contact

0

Revolution has received a Letter of No Objection (LNO) from the FDA for its proprietary recycling method for the production of post-consumer recycled linear low-density polyethylene (PCR-LLDPE) for food contact applications. LNO marks milestone in sustainability for the recycling and consumer packaging industries.

The FDA has indicated that packaging and other food contact items for all food types may contain Revolution’s PCR-LLDPE, with few limitations on use – provided the PCR-LLDPE is from a food grade material and complies with all applicable approvals.

Articles in contact with foodstuffs may contain up to 100% PCR-LLDPE.

Revolution, headquartered in Little Rock, AR, is a closed-loop plastics production and recycling company that collects, cleans, and converts post-consumer and post-industrial plastic films into polyethylene resin used to make films. .

Tammy Rucker, Vice President of Sustainable Materials at Revolution, answers our questions about the Sustainable Loop PCR-LLDPE technology in this exclusive Q&A.

What is the nature of Revolution’s proprietary recycling method?

Rucker: Revolution’s recycling method is mechanical. The certified chain of custody and washing processes are unique, having been developed and refined over more than 20 years.

Revolution Recycled Resin is available in flake and pellet form.

What are the advantages of PCR-LLDPE?

Rucker: Our direct food contact PCR-LLDPE is a high performance hot melt resin with strict specifications. This offer is particularly difficult in the recycling of films

Which packaging formats and product categories are good candidates for PCR-LLDPE?

Rucker: Revolution’s initial PCR product can be widely used in flexible film applications due to its high performance characteristics. [Applications include] agricultural films and bags, take-out bags, food preparation, irrigation polytube, plastic sheeting, stretch film and garbage bag some products. Revolution has been using a similar non-food version of this resin in blown film processing for over 20 years.

What claims can brands make on PCR-LLDPE packaging?

Rucker: Our certification allows brand owners to claim post-consumer recycled content. We believe it is more important to brand owners that PCR-LLDPE performance enables high percentages of PCR, allowing brands to avoid significant consumption of virgin plastic. This reduction in virgin plastic consumption leads to reduced greenhouse gases, landfill diversion, and job creation in the United States.

Is packaging made from PCR-LLDPE recyclable through store deposit programs?

Rucker: Our product is 100% recyclable. Packaging made from PCR-LLDPE can be collected and recycled.

Are there any brand owners or packaging suppliers using or testing Revolution’s PCR-LLDPE?

Rucker: Revolution has been using this resin process for over 20 years, having partnered with multiple companies to find the highest and best use. Several plastic film brands and processors have evaluated our PCR resins, and many use them in non-food applications. We will soon begin the sampling process for the specific direct food contact PCR-LLDPE resin.

When might commercial PCR-LLDPE packaging hit the shelves?

Rucker: Because film packaging companies have their own processes and timelines for product review and approval, we can’t predict when they’ll hit shelves, but we’re optimistic it will be this year.

Can you provide details on Revolution’s current capacity expansion for this recycling method?

Rucker: We are looking to increase volume and capacity as quickly as possible.

How will Revolution source post-consumer plastic as an input for recycling?

Rucker: We have a sophisticated collection network in which we recover, directly at the point of use, post-consumer recycled plastic films that have served their intended purpose. For example, picking up directly from a distribution center that bales waste stretch film or other tertiary packaging film, or collecting used polytubes from farmers at the end of the packing season. irrigation.

A key priority for us is to find PCR clients who can also offer us a collection opportunity. Creating circularity with our customers is a guiding principle and core strategic value for Revolution.
